By the Numbers

For this post, we’re going to look at the top five cities in the world based on population size. We’ll compare that number to the average from across the globe and then discuss which city is most densely populated and how that compares with other major global markets such as New York or London. If you’d like a detailed explanation of exactly what that means and if the data comes from some countries we’ll explain that as well. These are the numbers for each country/city. All the figures below are in billions (except in the US, where these are only in trillions).

**The world’s largest cities are:**

**Tijuana – 817 – Population 732.1 Million**

**São Paulo – 684.5 Million People – Population 3.7 Billion**

**Buenos Aires – 386.0 – Population 2.4 billion**

**New York City – 328.2 – Population 1.3 billion**

**London – 262.8 – Population 1.2 billion**

The table above shows there are some larger cities around the world than smaller ones and vice versa as well. For example, the biggest cities by population in both Tokyo and Los Angeles are also the largest cities by population in the United States.

We’ve included data for 2017 so only include cities in 2020 and have included a few countries that don’t exist anymore and it appears no one will be updating these numbers in 2021 so we won’t need this info again in 2024.

**Data Sources & Methodology**

There are plenty of good datasets out there but unfortunately due to Covid restrictions I wasn’t able to find all the exact information I needed so I did my own research to find out where exactly the cities are in terms of population density and then have done some comparison to determine which cities are most densely populated. There are lots of lists of the most populous cities in the world, however these lists take into account many things such as the economic state of cities and it has been shown in recent years that more people tend to live outside of big cities rather than in suburban areas. So when comparing the most populated cities in the world to the same thing you have to consider the fact that the vast majority of big cities are developed and have lots of amenities that make life easier and that makes them a great place to live.

This means the factors that go into the overall value of living in big cities don’t have an effect on the importance of the individual city compared to others. It’s important to know that the most populous cities might have higher levels of crime but generally speaking they tend to come down to lower crime rates when compared to the least populated parts of town. Therefore, although the most powerful factor is the amount of people living within a given area, there are many other factors that affect crime rates in a given area and generally speaking are better in bigger parts of towns and cities.

The second method used in looking at the top five cities in the world is called Density mapping and it uses simple geolocation software to map the location of different areas in all over the world. Each city gets a grid of cells in that grid called squares and each square is “inhabited” by people who live within it. The first step taken in creating this map is selecting one city to see what percentage of its square are inhabited by people and then assign a random value between 0 and 100 to get a rough idea of the amount of people living in a certain area.

However as we can see from the table above they don’t use a similar sort of method as most of the cities in the study aren’t very dense, particularly those closest to other big cities such as New York. When analyzing how people in any given city have compared to other cities, I found that generally the most populous cities are the poorest in terms of median income.

This can be seen in some countries like Brazil which don’t seem to have an issue with poverty rates despite the massive amounts of people living in dire poverty. Overall this allows us to see which cities are generally at the bottom of the wealth scale as their incomes fall far below the middle class in America and the UK.

There are two more data sources used in our analysis. One is the CIA World Factbook and the other was Wikipedia. While Wikipedia is a pretty reliable source it isn’t always accurate and especially with this data set it is not entirely clear what kind of data it has gathered to say.

However Wikipedia is still a fairly good resource in terms of providing a nice overview of the population of various locations and it would be quite difficult to know the truth about Wikipedia without seeing the original data. Additionally Wikipedia often adds new cities on its way and adds more data points to the data set so we can’t necessarily rely solely on Wikipedia data.

After conducting a bit of research, as a result of spending too much time worrying about data security, I decided to remove myself from Wikipedia.org database before working on any further analysis for now. After removing myself from Wikipedia I started work on researching on Wikipedia and found that it provided a lot of valuable facts even though it wasn’t comprehensive enough. I found that Wikipedia often provides more data than is stated on the website but it is always worth checking as a quick reference for future data sets.

For purposes of this report I am using Wikipedia’s current data so that I can have a clear picture of what the total population of each city is and what percentage of that population lives in extreme poverty without any help from Wikipedia. I will update this information if Wikipedia changes to provide additional statistics on its own and/or if new information becomes available in the future. So for this example I looked at the following information from Wikipedia:

The Wikipedia page contains a list of the most populated countries in the world. More specifically, it gives the number of inhabitants in every country in that continent. According to Wikipedia, each year, Wikipedia publishes a series of articles that reviews the countries of the year on topics ranging from politics, culture, sports, business and health to science, natural disasters and general news. The list is updated regularly through the Wikipedia wikiserver and it is updated weekly on Wikipedia’s home page or the site linked to it.

All the numbers above are expressed in millions of dollars of money so in order to find out the absolute value of the population of each of the cities I had to divide each of those numbers to make them relevant to my comparison of the top five cities by the numbers in the table above.

To do this I divided the population of each of the towns by the number of inhabitants of each of the cities. The reason behind dividing the population of the towns is because although they share the same number of inhabitants their populations are usually significantly different so the population density in each town is normally distributed and does not vary greatly.

I used this formula for each city to get an approximate total value based on average values. The average of the cities was then converted to make it fair to compare the top five cities to each other without any bias.

There were several types of calculations performed for this report and I am listing them below for more details.

To do this I split the numbers of inhabitants into groups based on their median income so that I was able to get the average population of each city with various levels of income.

This was then multiplied by the average of the five cities so that I could calculate the total population compared to the averages. Because the minimum and maximum income for each city were around $0,000 so I had to round off the sum to the nearest $0,000 then divide it by the number of inhabitants in that city.

The reasoning behind doing this because the distribution of minimum income for each city varies greatly and it is therefore difficult to calculate a standard mean.

The rationale behind this part was because the countries I was looking at included Taiwan and Hong Kong, two different nations with different level of development and yet very similar population densities. This meant that I couldn’t simply choose one value to represent the entire region, thus I chose three different values based on average population densities and I then multiplied these values together to give me the final population of the four countries that surround the regions.

This was done as this gives a relative measure of the population density of the cities so that I could decide which cities are the most populous by comparing them to each other.
